MONROVIA — The Sports Writers Association of Liberia will mark its 39th anniversary in historic fashion Saturday, Oct. 4, by taking the celebration to Ganta, Nimba County, for the first time.
The daylong program in Liberia’s northern commercial hub will feature a parade, a football match and an anniversary dinner aimed at highlighting both the celebratory and unifying spirit of the occasion.
Organizers said the official departure from Monrovia is set for Friday, Oct. 3, with a return on Sunday, Oct. 5. Transportation, lodging and meals will be provided for all accredited members. Specially branded SWAL anniversary T-shirts are on sale for $10 to foster solidarity during the festivities.
“This year’s anniversary is historic because it breaks new ground for SWAL,” said Nathaniel S. Tokpah, chairman of the anniversary committee and head of the SWAL Nimba chapter. “We are taking the celebration beyond Monrovia, which allows us to engage more communities and demonstrate inclusivity across the country.”
Tokpah announced that businessman and Liberia Football Association Nimba County Sub-Association chair Tomah Seh Floyd Sr. will serve as keynote speaker. He added that several local business leaders and prominent citizens — including Nimba County Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono, two-time County Meet–winning chairman Adonis David Menlor, and Odoshall Oldpa Karnue, CEO of God’s Willing Inc. — will grace the occasion.
The decision to host the celebration outside the capital reflects SWAL’s push for decentralization and broader participation as it seeks to strengthen its presence nationwide.
This year’s anniversary will be held under the theme: “Celebrating the Gains and Shining Light on Rural Sports Journalism in Liberia.”
Tokpah urged all members to participate fully, saying the event will celebrate the progress of sports journalism while reaffirming SWAL’s role as a unifying force in Liberia’s sporting and media landscape.
