MONROVIA — The Liberia Football Association, with support from FIFA, will inaugurate three new pitches Monday, including a standard FIFA-approved field in Gompa, Nimba County, and two FIFA Arena mini-pitches in Montserrado and Margibi counties.
The Gompa project, funded through the FIFA Forward program, began Nov. 4, 2024, and features floodlights, an underground sprinkler system, inner fencing, and roofed spectator stands. LFA President Mustapha Raji said the facility will host league fixtures and grassroots tournaments as part of the association’s infrastructure push.
Ahead of the Gompa ceremony, LFA and FIFA officials will dedicate two 20-by-40-meter (7-a-side) mini-pitches — one at Bible Way Mission School on the Roberts International Airport road in Montserrado and another at EBK Barracks in Margibi.
The FIFA Arena project, a pilot effort launched by FIFA to promote grassroots football in schools and community spaces, has selected Liberia as one of 11 “Starting XI” member associations. The global initiative, backed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, aims to build more than 1,000 mini-pitches worldwide to expand access to the sport for children.
FIFA’s regional director for Africa and deputy chief member-associations officer, Gelson Fernandes, and FIFA development officer El Hadji Diop will represent the governing body at Monday’s ceremonies.
