ZORZOR, Lofa County – Assistant Minister of Labour for Statistics and Research Jackson F. Wolobah has launched a community development initiative in his native Zorzor District, donating more than US$2,150 worth of materials to support sanitation, market infrastructure and community institutions while engaging local stakeholders on priorities for sustainable development.
The outreach, which combined material donations with a series of community consultations, reflects efforts to address immediate local needs while identifying longer-term interventions to improve livelihoods across the district.
Among the beneficiaries was the Zorzor City Corporation, which received five wheelbarrows, machetes, shovels, hand gloves and reflective safety vests to strengthen waste management efforts and improve public sanitation.
Responding to an appeal from local traders, Wolobah also donated 10 bundles of zinc to the Liberia Marketing Association’s Zorzor branch to repair sections of the district’s central market. The Church of Christ also benefited from three bundles of zinc to support the construction of its worship center.
Local officials welcomed the intervention and encouraged greater community participation in the district’s development.
Zorzor City Council, headed by Chairman Mulbah Weegie Kessellie and Mayor Yanquoi Dolo, praised the donation and urged other sons and daughters of Zorzor to emulate Wolobah by contributing to efforts aimed at maintaining a cleaner and healthier city.
Liberia Marketing Association District Superintendent Varbah Johnson expressed appreciation for the assistance but challenged government officials to maintain stronger ties with their communities.
He urged political appointees to “do more to keep an active base with their constituents ahead of the 2029 election.”
Beyond the donations, representatives from Wolobah’s office, including his Special Assistant Jeremiah Sumo, held separate consultations with the administration of Zorzor Central High School, the Zorzor Motorcyclist Association, the Mechanics Union, and local petty traders.
The meetings focused on identifying major challenges confronting each institution and exploring practical interventions that could be pursued through the minister’s official responsibilities as well as his personal commitment to community development.
The latest initiative builds on Wolobah’s previous support to the Liberia National Police detachment in Zorzor, the District Health Team, and the local education sector. He previously donated 50 bags of cement to support the Lorma Zuui Development Association Hospital Project, among other community initiatives.
The outreach also comes in the wake of a recent call by Vice President Jeremiah Koung, who urged appointed government officials to return to their home communities and make meaningful contributions to local development.
Looking ahead, Wolobah announced plans to introduce a district-wide scholarship program for students attending public schools across Zorzor, with the objective of easing financial barriers to education and expanding opportunities for young people.
The initiative underscores a broader effort to combine immediate community support with long-term investment in education and local development, as residents look forward to seeing the consultations translated into tangible programs and lasting improvements.
