Monrovia – Just days after The Liberian Investigator exposed the overgrown weeds and trash piling up at the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) Sports Complex, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has launched a cleanup operation to restore the nation’s iconic stadium to its former glory.
The SKD Sports Complex, once a hub for thrilling football matches, vibrant concerts, and national celebrations, had become a shadow of its former self, overrun by overgrowth and accumulated trash. The exposé spurred collaboration between the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Paynesville City Corporation (PCC), and the Ministry of Public Works to begin restoration efforts.
A team was dispatched to clear overgrown weeds and remove piles of garbage, rejuvenating the area around the stadium. This cleanup effort not only aims to restore the stadium’s former glory but also sets a benchmark for maintaining public facilities across Liberia.
Youth and Sports Minister Cllr. Jeror Cole Bangalu, speaking with The Liberian Investigator, acknowledged the need for consistent upkeep and pledged to implement more rigorous maintenance schedules to prevent future neglect. He also called on the Liberia Football Association (LFA) and residents of the SKD community to actively participate in maintaining the facility.
“The LFA and community members are part of this situation, so they should join us in keeping the place clean,” Minister Bangalu stated.
Community members and sports enthusiasts have expressed their gratitude for the swift response and their hope that the stadium will once again serve as a premier venue for sports and entertainment.
