GBARNGA, Bong County — The Seed Development and Certification Agency (SDCA) is set to begin a three-day intensive training workshop in Gbarnga aimed at strengthening seed quality assurance and enhancing Liberia’s agricultural productivity through improved seed certification and inspection standards.
The workshop, running from November 12–14 at the 101 Building of the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI), brings together seed inspectors, extension agents, and local farmers. It focuses on empowering participants with the technical skills and institutional capacity needed to uphold national seed quality and certification standards.
The training highlights Liberia’s four priority commodities—rice, cassava, soybean, and coffee—which play critical roles in driving food security, economic growth, and agricultural diversification. Organizers say these crops represent vital links in the government’s broader Seeds4Liberia Project, which aims to improve access to quality seeds and foster private sector engagement across the value chain.
“The workshop will help build a critical mass of trained seed inspectors and extension agents who can enforce quality standards, support producers, and improve seed system governance nationwide,” SDCA stated in a release.
According to the agency, the workshop also forms part of a long-term institutional capacity development plan designed to serve as a model for other agricultural value chains in Liberia. Participants will be trained in seed quality control, certification procedures, sampling, evaluation, and regulatory compliance to ensure uniform application of national seed standards.
The initiative, officials noted, underscores SDCA’s commitment to building resilience within Liberia’s agricultural sector by promoting high-quality seeds and modern certification practices that align with international standards.
