MONROVIA — Flames Basketball, in partnership with the Liberia Basketball Association, has concluded its inaugural youth camp, capping three weeks of training aimed at grooming the country’s next generation of basketball talent.
The camp, which ran from July 21 to August 14 at Stella Maris Gym in Monrovia, brought together 150 children ages 5 to 16 for daily sessions led by FIBA-certified coaches. Held Monday through Saturday, the program focused on skill development, teamwork, and mentorship.
Each participant received a branded jersey, basketball, and certificate of completion. Performance-based awards were presented at Thursday’s closing ceremony, which featured mini competitions and a lively 30-minute shooting drill involving parents and coaching staff.
Flames Basketball President Fenny Louise Taylor-Diggs said the camp was designed to encourage growth in the sport and thanked parents for their trust and support.
“Basketball is a popular sport in Liberia, and all we need is support to help it reclaim its rightful place among sports in the country,” Taylor-Diggs said. “The turnout was encouraging, and we’re grateful to the young athletes for their enthusiastic participation.”
She urged campers to put their new skills into practice and encouraged parents to enroll their children in future editions.
“You know your first time doing anything, you’re trying,” she said. “We’ve learned, and I can promise that the next event will be better.”
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Danielle Dennis of BW Harris High School praised the initiative.
“We’re going to make use of the skills and knowledge gained to become better players for our schools and teams,” Dennis said.
Liberia Basketball Association Secretary General Calvin Diggs, who also serves as CEO of Flames Basketball, assured parents that the program is here to stay.
“This program is here to stay,” Diggs said. “We will continue to train more players for the good of basketball in Liberia.”
