MONROVIA — Liberia Football Association presidential hopeful Cassell A. Kuoh has called on the country’s football governing body to disclose the source of new funding for recently announced increases in league prize money.
The appeal came hours after LFA President Mustapha Raji revealed Tuesday that the Executive Committee had unanimously approved higher cash awards for the 2025-26 season. Under the new plan, First Division champions will receive $30,000, up from $20,000, while Upper Women’s League winners will collect $25,000, an increase from $20,000.
Kuoh, who also serves as CEO of FC Fassell, welcomed the boost but questioned its timing — just eight months before the LFA’s elective congress.
“We urge the Executive Committee and the president to clearly communicate the source of this additional funding, as it was not included in the official annual budget of the LFA,” Kuoh said in a statement.
He suggested the move may be politically motivated, aimed at shoring up support for a potential third-term bid by Raji and members of the Executive Committee.
Kuoh also argued that the increased prizes still lag behind what clubs in neighboring countries receive, and urged the LFA to extend financial rewards to runners-up in both the men’s and women’s leagues.
“For two seasons now, the league has been without an official sponsor. We refuse to believe that private companies are not interested in sponsoring our league,” he said, blaming the absence of sponsorship on what he described as “a failure of innovation and leadership” within the association.
He added that stronger leadership was needed to attract sponsors and improve the marketing and branding of Liberia’s leagues.
Kuoh’s comments add to growing calls for transparency and financial accountability in Liberian football as the 2026 LFA elections approach.
