MONROVIA, Liberia — A power struggle over who should be the public face of Liberia’s “Say No to Drugs” campaign is raising fears that internal divisions could weaken the movement’s fight against drug abuse.
The campaign, which has gained strong nationwide support, is now mired in controversy. Some backers have praised Roseline Amah Giddings as the true leader of the initiative, while others accuse Sonnie Kollie of attempting to take credit.
Kollie, in a series of social media posts Monday, defended her reputation against what she described as unfair attacks before announcing her resignation.
“I am out of the SAY NO TO DRUGS CAMPAIGN. Let GOD BE THE JUDGE 🙏,” she wrote in a public post.
It remains unclear how her departure will affect the campaign’s leadership, but observers warn the infighting could sap momentum from one of Liberia’s most visible grassroots efforts to tackle drug addiction.
