The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection presented equipment to Nimba County’s Gender Office as it began a review of programs supporting women, girls and vulnerable communities.

SANNIQUELLIE, Nimba County — Nimba County’s Gender Office has new computers, office furniture and 25 mattresses for safe homes, delivered as the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection opened a nationwide review of the programs it runs for women, girls and vulnerable communities.

Gender Minister Gbeme Horace Kollie presented the consignment Monday at the Gender Office in Sanniquellie, the first stop on an assessment tour that will measure how the ministry’s flagship programs are performing on the ground and where they need to improve.

The equipment includes desktop computers, laptops, printers, fans, office chairs and desks, along with mattresses and book bags for safe homes. It was provided under Component Four of the Liberia Women Empowerment Project, or LWEP, which focuses on building institutional capacity to improve the delivery of services.

Kollie said the items are meant to strengthen the Nimba office’s operations and its ability to serve citizens. She said resources sent to county offices must translate into better services for women, girls, and other vulnerable groups, and that the support aligns with the ministry’s new Five-Year Strategic Plan for 2026-2030, which aims to improve institutional performance and strengthen gender-responsive services nationwide.

Nimba County Gender Coordinator Yaah Belleh Suah, who received the materials, said they would strengthen the office’s operations, improve the management and confidentiality of official documents and boost staff productivity. She credited Kollie’s leadership with making the ministry’s work in Nimba more visible, measurable and impactful.

Suah said more than 5,000 women in the county are benefiting from the Spotlight Initiative 2.0 and the Recovery of Economic Activities for Liberian Informal Sector Employment project, known as REALISE. Under the Spotlight Initiative, she said, women and girls are trained to understand and respond to gender-based violence, survivors receive financial support, and staff receive capacity-building opportunities.

The impact is visible at the community level. In Gbanquoi Town, Paramount Chief James Karlay said the Spotlight Initiative’s adult literacy program has taught community members basic reading and writing. He said more than 127 women, men and young people in the town are benefiting from the initiative, and that beneficiaries are preparing to take up snail farming as a livelihood under the project.

Speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, Karlay thanked the government, through the ministry, for what he called life-changing support and appealed for continued backing to sustain the gains.

The assessment will examine the quality of project implementation; output-level results; the performance of livelihood activities and grant beneficiaries; improvements in household incomes; and the sustainability of interventions under LWEP, REALISE, and the Spotlight Initiative 2.0. The first phase covers Nimba, Bong, Lofa, Margibi, Grand Bassa and Rivercess counties.

The ministry said the findings will provide a clearer picture of progress, challenges, and sustainability across its programs and guide improvements in implementation.
