RABAT, Morocco – House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon has called on parliamentary leaders from Atlantic African countries to support Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Speaker Koon made the appeal during a speech delivered on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at the opening of a three-day high-level meeting of Speakers of Parliaments of African Atlantic States in Rabat, Morocco.
The Speaker emphasized that Liberia’s longstanding contributions to peacekeeping and its resilient democratic governance make it a worthy candidate to advocate for Africa’s collective interests on the global stage.
“As we engage in strategic partnerships for regional advancement, I wish to highlight Liberia’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council Non-Permanent Seat for the 2026–2027 term. We humbly seek the support of all member states in this pursuit, reaffirming our shared commitment to global peace and security,” Speaker Koon said.
This aligns with a call made by Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai during the UN General Assembly in New York, where he urged the international community to back Liberia’s candidacy for the 2026–2027 term. President Boakai highlighted Liberia’s historical role as a founding member of the United Nations and its predecessor, the League of Nations, as well as the country’s contributions to peace, security, and human dignity.
Speaker Koon is leading a six-member delegation from the Liberian House of Representatives to the high-level meeting. The forum aims to foster collaboration, share best practices, and address pressing issues affecting parliaments across the African continent.
The meeting brings together parliamentary leaders from across Africa to deliberate on critical governance issues, including regional integration, economic development, and maritime security. The gathering also supports the Royal Atlantic Initiative, which focuses on enhancing cooperation among Atlantic African states in areas such as economic complementarities, sustainable resource management, and strategic investments.
Members of the Liberian delegation include Representatives Nehker E. Gaye, Foday Edward Fahnbulleh, Austin B. Taylor, and Jeremiah G. Sokan.
