RABAT, Morocco – Maryland County Electoral District #3 Representative Austin B. Taylor has emphasized the importance of leveraging the Atlantic Ocean and its vast maritime resources to drive economic growth and development across Africa.
Speaking to journalists after the first day of deliberations at the three-day parliamentary meeting of the Atlantic African States Process (AASP) in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Representative Taylor stressed the need to strategically organize the Atlantic front and harness the blue economy to promote prosperity.
“Prioritizing maritime connectivity among African nations will significantly enhance intra-African trade relations,” Taylor said. He called on leaders at the forum to adopt a participatory approach, fostering collaboration among Atlantic coastal states to advance the continent’s collective interests.
As Chair of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Maritime Affairs, Taylor expressed optimism that Africa can achieve significant milestones in security, economic growth, and resource management through concerted efforts and regional cooperation.
The AASP meeting aims to foster a robust partnership among Atlantic African states, positioning the region as a hub for human synergy, economic development, and global influence.
This high-level forum provides a platform for parliamentary leaders to exchange insights on sustainable resource management, strategic investment attraction, and enhanced maritime security—key pillars for Africa’s economic and geopolitical advancement.
The AASP framework underscores the immense potential of Atlantic Africa, a region encompassing 23 countries, home to 46% of the continent’s population, contributing 55% of Africa’s GDP, and facilitating more than half of intra-African trade.
While in Morocco, the Liberian legislative delegation is set to meet with His Majesty King Mohammed VI, engage with staff at the Liberian Embassy, and hold discussions with parliamentary leaders to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
On the sidelines of the parliamentary engagement, Liberia will also seek support from member states for its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This move highlights the country’s commitment to taking on a more prominent role in global diplomacy and security affairs.
