MONROVIA — Grand Cape Mount County has appointed Samir Kamara as head coach ahead of the National County Sports Meet, ending weeks of speculation that he would lead Bong County’s squad.
Kamara, a native of Cape Mount and a former Jubilee FC boss, was widely expected to take charge of Bong County after a deal that sources say was “95 percent completed.” Instead, he opted to return to his birthplace, a decision insiders attribute to family influence — particularly his mother’s persuasion — and a more lucrative offer from Cape Mount.
“If people were taking Grand Cape Mount County to be an underdog, they should erase that mentality,” Kamara declared during his unveiling. “Cape Mount can never be an underdog because the name Samir Kamara isn’t a name to joke about in Liberia.”
Kamara, known for his confident and outspoken approach, has earned the nickname “Italian Gaffer” for his stylish touchline presence. As part of his contract, he reportedly requested six suits in different colors to wear throughout the tournament, from the group stage to the final.
Grand Cape Mount will host part of the group-stage matches in this year’s County Meet. The “Kpassajama Boys,” also known as the “Cassava Leaves Boys,” last won the football category in 1969 and ended a 44-year title drought with their 2013 triumph. In the 2024–25 edition, they exited in the quarterfinals.
A former player in Liberia’s top flight, Kamara featured for LISCR FC, LPRC Oilers, and Watanga FC. His appointment is being seen as a bold step in Cape Mount’s bid to mount a serious title challenge.
