Monrovia – The Liberia Chess Federation (LCF) will host a one-day workshop for members of the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) on Friday, March 7, 2025, in Monrovia.
The event aims to enhance sports journalists’ understanding of chess, enabling them to provide more insightful and accurate coverage of the game.
Speaking at a meeting at the federation’s headquarters in Sinkor on Friday, February 28, 2024, LCF President Thomas Karyah underscored the significance of the training. “Our goal is to equip sports journalists with a deeper understanding of chess so they can effectively report on the sport,” he said.
Karyah emphasized that chess is not only a game of intellect and strategy but also a growing aspect of global sports culture. “By training our journalists, we hope to bring more visibility and appreciation to the game,” he added.
He further noted that the initiative would strengthen the relationship between the media and the chess community, ultimately fostering the sport’s growth and popularity in Liberia.
“By empowering our sports writers with the right knowledge and skills, we are not only supporting their professional development but also promoting chess as an important and exciting sport in Liberia,” he said.
In response to the announcement, SWAL Secretary General Edwin Dolo commended the LCF for taking the initiative to train journalists in chess reporting.
He also praised the few journalists who currently cover the sport and encouraged others to participate in the training.
“This workshop will be invaluable, and I must commend our few members who have been reporting on chess,” Dolo said.
