SANNIQUILLIE, NIMBA COUNTY — President Joseph Nyumah Boakai Sr. has pledged his administration’s “unwavering” commitment to improving the welfare and operational readiness of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), commissioning the newly renovated and modernized Camp Grant Military Barracks on Aug. 9.
Describing AFL personnel as “true patriots,” Boakai acknowledged that soldiers have long endured overcrowded and inadequate facilities and low budgetary support despite their role in safeguarding Liberia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“For too long, our brave soldiers, who stand ready to protect our hard-won peace and territorial integrity, have contended with congested and inadequate facilities. This situation was untenable. Today, we decisively address this challenge,” Boakai said.
He called the renovation of Camp Grant a significant step in his administration’s broader agenda to revitalize the nation’s defense infrastructure.
“My administration remains steadfast in its commitment to continue investing in the AFL — in your training, your equipment, your welfare, and your facilities,” he said. “We will persist in building a force that is a source of enduring national pride and a force for good.”
Boakai said the upgraded barracks will help decongest existing military facilities and provide better living and working conditions for soldiers, reflecting the nation’s respect for their service. He urged both the military and residents of Nimba County to see the facility as “a symbol of national presence and progress” rather than merely a military installation.
“This investment, made possible through the allocation of resources by the Government of Liberia, sends a clear message: We value our soldiers. We honor their sacrifices. We are committed to providing them with the environment they need to train effectively, to serve professionally, and to live decently with their families,” Boakai said.
The president stressed that decent housing and functional workplaces are “not a luxury” but a fundamental necessity for a professional military force. He encouraged soldiers to maintain the facility with pride and uphold high standards of professionalism and integrity.
Constructed in the early 1980s, Camp Grant was destroyed during Liberia’s 14-year civil war and remained abandoned for decades, with citizens encroaching on the property. Located in Sanniquillie, the charred walls and dilapidated structures had stood as a stark reminder of war and neglect.
Following 10 months of rehabilitation funded under the 2024–25 national budget, the barracks have been transformed into a modern, fully equipped facility. The site now features 11 refurbished housing units with 62 apartments, upgraded administrative blocks, improved water and power systems, and space for training and outdoor activities.
The dedication ceremony was attended by senior defense officials, government representatives, and residents of Nimba County.
