CAPITOL HILL, Monrovia — Grand Gedeh County Sen. Zoe Emmanuel Pennue has accused the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) of hypocrisy, arguing that the party recently did the very thing it expelled him for, while also launching a scathing attack on former President George Weah’s Chief of Staff Lenn Eugene Nagbe, whom he described as a continued “bag boy” to the former Liberian leader.
Speaking Thursday at a news conference in his Capitol Building office, Pennue said the CDC had effectively vindicated his controversial remarks about improved road conditions in Grand Gedeh after party officials successfully traveled to the county to celebrate the CDC’s 22nd anniversary without raising complaints about the roads.
The senator also criticized former Grand Gedeh Sen. A. Marshall Dennis, arguing that he failed to make meaningful contributions to the county despite his years in public office.
Pennue Says CDC Validated His Position
Pennue said his statement that people could travel to Grand Gedeh under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration wearing white clothes without getting muddy was the reason the CDC expelled him for allegedly supporting the ruling Unity Party.
He argued that the party has now contradicted itself.
“When I said people would travel to Grand Gedeh under the Boakai administration and their white clothes will remain clean, something that never happened under Weah’s administration that the people of the county voted, the party accused me of supporting the UP and got me out,” Pennue said.
“This is the same county they travelled to, to celebrate the party’s 22nd anniversary without any complaint since they returned.”
The senator said the CDC’s successful trip to Grand Gedeh confirms his earlier assessment that road conditions have improved under the current administration.
Responding to claims by Nagbe that former President Weah elevated his political career, Pennue accused the former Liberia Maritime Authority boss of hypocrisy, alleging that Nagbe had previously questioned Weah’s suitability for the presidency and once remarked that “his feet are better than his brain.”
He further argued that unlike Nagbe, whose influence depended on presidential appointment, he earned his office through the votes of the people of Grand Gedeh County.
“Despite officials like Nagbe claiming to be from the Southeast, students and citizens in that region continue to suffer due to impassable roads,” Pennue said.
“I challenge him to play an audio or video recording where I ever insulted President Weah.”
Pennue also dismissed Dennis’ criticisms, arguing that the former senator misunderstood the responsibilities of lawmakers and failed in his oversight role. He claimed that despite not holding a master’s degree, he has created more jobs for Grand Gedeh residents than any other leader in the county.
Independent Senator Vows to Keep Praising Boakai
Pennue defended his cordial relationship with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration, arguing that maintaining constructive ties with the executive is necessary to secure development for constituents.
He said Liberia’s political environment requires cooperation rather than unnecessary confrontation.
The senator maintained that as long as the Boakai administration continues delivering development to Grand Gedeh County, he will continue publicly acknowledging those efforts.
He also urged his supporters to reject politics driven by insults and personal attacks against national leaders.
“The best thing you can do is to tell the few supporters you have to respect their leaders but telling the minority to insult the majority, 2029 is coming,” he warned.
Asked about his political future, Pennue said he remains an independent lawmaker following his expulsion from the CDC and expressed relief over his departure from the party.
He maintained that no political affiliation would prevent him from praising what he described as the Boakai-Koung administration’s “massive” development initiatives in Grand Gedeh County, insisting that he refuses to become “a lying politician.”
