WASHINGTON — Liberia’s Ambassador to the United States praised President Joseph Boakai on Sunday after the Liberian leader received a prestigious peace honor from a California university, calling the recognition a proud moment for the West African nation on the global stage.
Ambassador Al-Hassan Conteh applauded Boakai for receiving the Africa Peace Leadership Award from California State University, Sacramento, saying the honor reflects the president’s commitment to peace, democratic governance and principled leadership.
“President Boakai’s recognition on such an international stage underscores Liberia’s enduring commitment to peace and good governance,” Conteh said. “This honor is not only well deserved, but it also elevates Liberia’s standing among nations committed to stability and reconciliation.”
The award was conferred during Boakai’s working visit to California from April 23 to 26, during which he also delivered a keynote address at the 34th Annual Africa Peace Awards hosted by Sacramento State’s Center for African Peace and Conflict Resolution. The forum drew scholars, policymakers and peace advocates from around the world.
Conteh described the four-day visit as “historic and impactful,” saying it advanced Liberia’s global engagement and strengthened partnerships in peacebuilding, education and economic diplomacy.
During the visit, Boakai held meetings with Sacramento State President Luke Wood, officials of the City of Sacramento and members of the Liberian diaspora community. He also met with Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty to explore opportunities for subnational partnerships in trade, investment and institutional collaboration.
The ambassador singled out discussions on agriculture and development cooperation as particularly significant, noting they align with Liberia’s strategic priorities for sustainable economic growth.
Conteh said engagement with the Liberian community in California reaffirmed the diaspora’s role in national development, adding that their contributions continue to shape Liberia’s progress and international presence.
“Liberians abroad remain key partners in our development agenda,” he said.
The ambassador said the California visit has opened new avenues for academic exchange, economic cooperation and stronger ties between Liberia and the state.
“This mission sends a clear message that Liberia is committed to peace, reconciliation and responsible leadership on the global stage,” Conteh said.
