MONROVIA — World Girls FC are back in the Orange Cup final for the third consecutive season, and for the third time they will have to beat someone who has already beaten them to get the trophy they have never won.
The Iron Ladies secured their place Tuesday with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Senior Female Professional, recovering from a 2-1 home defeat in the second leg after a commanding 2-0 away win in the first had put them in control of the tie.
Their reward is another final, and another steep climb. Shaita Angels, who beat World Girls in a penalty shootout in the 2023-24 final, are waiting on the other side after dismantling Kneeling Warriors 13-1 on aggregate, winning 7-0 at home before finishing the job with a 6-1 away victory Tuesday.
World Girls know what losing this final feels like better than anyone. After the shootout defeat to Shaita Angels two seasons ago, they returned to the final last season only to be beaten 3-0 by Determine Girls at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex. Two finals, two defeats, no silverware.
The Orange Cup is now their only remaining chance for a trophy this season, their league title hopes having already slipped away. Shaita Angels, by contrast, are chasing a domestic double, sitting second in the league with 54 points from 20 matches, one point behind leaders Determine Girls.
The form gap between the two finalists appears significant, but World Girls carry one notable advantage into the match: they are the only team to have defeated Shaita Angels this season.
That single result may not be enough to settle three seasons of hurt. But it is enough to make this final worth watching.
