MONROVIA — The office of former Liberian President George Weah on Wednesday denied reports circulating on social media that he is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in the coming days.
The rumors gained traction following a late-night broadcast Tuesday on Spoon FM, where host Stanton A. Witherspoon claimed Weah would travel to the United States after a stop in Morocco to meet Trump at the White House.
“We received information that former President George Weah will be traveling to the United States after leaving Morocco to meet President Donald John Trump at the White House,” Witherspoon said during the show, which aired on Spoon FM and its affiliates.
Witherspoon alleged the meeting would focus on lobbying for the removal of sanctions imposed on officials during Weah’s administration. He described the rumored meeting as a “golden opportunity” for the opposition Congress for Democratic Change party, which Weah leads.
In 2022, the U.S. government sanctioned several officials from Weah’s government over alleged corruption.
Responding during the broadcast, former Montserrado County District #8 Representative Acarous Moses Gray, a senior CDC member, dismissed the report as misleading. He told party supporters to expect “breaking news” soon that would “shock the country.”
On Wednesday, Lenn Eugene Nagbe, chief of staff to the former president, issued a statement on Facebook denying the report.
“I wish to clarify that there is currently no scheduled meeting between United States President Donald Trump and Former President George Weah individually or as a member of a FIFA delegation as reported by Spoon Network,” Nagbe wrote.
He accused Spoon Network of engaging in a “political phishing expedition,” and noted that while Weah plays a key role on FIFA’s team and Trump is involved in preparations for the 2026 World Cup, no meeting is currently planned.
Nagbe added that such a meeting could possibly occur as the global event approaches.
