WEALA, Margibi County — Police in Margibi County are investigating the discovery of the decomposed body of an unidentified woman found floating face down in the Wea River in District No. 5, Weala Township.
The body was discovered Wednesday, July 22, after local residents alerted authorities that a body had been seen floating in the upper section of the river, according to a report from the Liberia National Police.
A team of investigators led by Supt. Mohammed Kromah, commander of the Criminal Services Division in Margibi County, proceeded to the scene to verify the report and begin preliminary investigations.
Police said investigators arrived at approximately 11:14 a.m., about 22 minutes on foot from the Weala Police Depot, and found the body floating face down in the river.
The deceased was wearing black short trousers and a gray T-shirt with the words “Champion Trophy” printed on the back, police said.
Authorities said the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, making identification difficult. None of the residents or district authorities present at the scene could identify the deceased.
Following a preliminary examination, the body was turned over to district authorities for preservation while efforts continue to establish the woman’s identity and determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
Police have not established whether the woman drowned accidentally or whether her death involved foul play. The investigation remains ongoing.
The Liberia National Police is appealing to members of the public who may have information about a missing woman or anyone who recognizes the clothing worn by the deceased to come forward and assist investigators.
The discovery has renewed concerns among residents about safety along the Wea River, particularly following a separate incident in October 2025 in which two girls reportedly went missing while traveling to a farm across the river.
According to family sources, 14-year-old Unice Mulbah and her 9-year-old cousin, Liamah Jackson, left their home in the Peace Island community of Weala at about 10 a.m. on Oct. 11, 2025, reportedly to dig cassava on a farm located across the river, about a two-hour walk from town.
The girls were reportedly attempting to cross the river using a large stick placed across the water as a makeshift bridge, a method reportedly used by some residents because of the lack of a safer crossing facility.
Unice Mulbah was later reported dead in connection with the incident, while Liamah Jackson remains missing up till now, according to family sources.
The investigation into the unidentified woman’s death is continuing as authorities work to determine her identity and establish how she entered the river and what led to her death.
