UN Peacebuilding Chair Urges Liberia to Tie Peace with Development

Monrovia – The Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission’s Liberia Configuration and Sweden’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Her Excellency Mrs. Nicola Clase, has underscored the importance of connecting peacebuilding with development to secure Liberia’s long-term stability.

During a five-day mission to Liberia from November 21 to 26, 2024, Ambassador Clase engaged government officials, women’s groups, youth, and civil society organizations to discuss Liberia’s peacebuilding priorities. Speaking to reporters on Monday, November 25, at the One UN House in Monrovia, she highlighted Liberia’s vast potential, particularly in its youth.

“There is tremendous potential in the youth of the country,” she remarked, noting that Liberians’ commitment to peace is evident from the successful conduct of the 2023 presidential and legislative elections.

Peacebuilding Tied to Development
Ambassador Clase stressed that Liberians are eager to translate peace into economic progress, emphasizing the need to invest in education for children, youth, and adults. “This highlighted the need to link peacebuilding with development to set the country on a path of sustained economic growth, which will, in turn, sustain peace,” she said.

During her visit to women’s groups and a peace hut, Clase lauded Liberian women for their critical role in ending the civil war and fostering sustainable peace. However, she noted their continued calls for greater economic and political participation, protection from gender-based violence, and access to essential services.

Support from the Peacebuilding Fund
Ambassador Clase disclosed that the Peacebuilding Fund has provided over $100 million to Liberia since 2007, supporting government institutions and local initiatives aimed at sustaining peace. She praised recent steps by the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, including the establishment of the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Court, as evidence of the country’s commitment to ending impunity and promoting justice.

Call for Collaboration
The Swedish envoy called on Liberians and their government to sustain dialogue and constructive engagement to maintain the peace that the nation has enjoyed for 21 years. “Liberia has shown tremendous resilience. We want to support Liberia’s efforts to build lasting peace and development,” she said.

Accompanied by colleagues from the UN Peacebuilding Support Office and the UN Resident Coordinator, Clase’s visit reflects the Peacebuilding Commission’s ongoing commitment to help Liberia transition from conflict to prosperity.
