Washington, D.C. — The Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA/Union) unequivocally condemns the acts of violence and lawlessness at the Capitol building in Liberia on December 17-18, 2024.
ULAA finds images and videos of violence and bloodshed during the protest particularly disturbing and calls on all parties to exercise restraint. Especially disturbing are images and videos of the Capitol Building engulfed in flames today.
While it is not yet clear what caused the fire, its occurrence at this time further heightens tension in an already fragile situation and has the potential to instigate more lawlessness. Particular care needs to be taken at this time to investigate the cause of the fire at the Capitol and reports of violence by the police and protesters.
All perpetrators need to be brought to justice. These disturbing incidents exacerbate an already volatile situation and pose a significant threat to the stability of our nation. In light of allegations of unlawful arrests and detentions, it is imperative that law enforcement agencies exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law.
ULAA calls on all parties to remain calm and to prioritize dialogue over force. We demand a thorough and impartial investigation into the fire and actions of the police and protesters. Those responsible for instigating violence or engaging in unlawful acts must be held accountable to ensure justice and restore peace.
In this critical moment, ULAA urges the government, law enforcement and the citizenry to work collaboratively to deescalate tensions and foster a climate of mutual respect, understanding and the rule of law. The sanctity of Liberia’s democratic institutions must be protected at all cost. We call on the US Government, the African Union, the European Union, Ecowas and the United Nations to stand with Liberia during these fragile times and continue to denounce lawlessness.
