MONROVIA — A tragic accident along the Bong-Monrovia highway has claimed the life of Tupee Darwoe, a football player who traded his career with Paynesville FC. Darwoe, who lost his father, brother, and grandmother to separate car accidents earlier this year (2025), died in the same tragic way this past weekend, his club has confirmed.
The young man, still mourning the deaths of his loved ones, had no idea that his own end might have followed in the same way—the terrible experience many ask: “God, why?” His life was cut short, and dreams shattered, with no signs of hope that he could return to fulfill his earthly purpose. Darwoe is gone—gone with his precious gift—and, as promised in every Holy Book, a reunion with his beloved in the great beyond awaits his soul.
Darwoe died late Saturday evening in a car accident while returning from a graduation ceremony in Bong County.
Paynesville FC has announced with heavy heart the loss of the young player whom it says was a remarkable asset in the defense of the team.
The Club’s spokesman, Luke Joe, told The Liberian Investigator that Darwoe was among six people traveling in a vehicle that reportedly lost control and struck a light pole, leading to the loss of lives.
According to the Club’s spokesman, Darwoe was rushed to a nearby medical facility but all efforts proved futile as he was pronounced dead by the health practitioners on duty.
Joe disclosed further that another passenger also died, while two others remain in critical condition with severe injuries.
Darwoe joined Paynesville FC on August 7, 2024, from Thunder FC, a third-division team in the ELWA Subcommittee League. He played over 25 matches for the Citizens across all competitions and represented Bong County twice in the National County Sports Meet. Although he never scored in official matches, he made a crucial assist in Paynesville’s 1–0 victory over Cameroonian club Fovu in the CAF Confederation Cup second leg in Cameroon during the 2023–24 season.
News of his death has drawn condolences from across Liberia’s football community.. LISCR Football Club said it was “profoundly saddened” and described Darwoe’s passing as “a great loss to the Paynesville FC family and the entire football community.”
Determine Girls’ suspended president, Grace Weah, wrote: “My deepest condolences to Sackie and your entire team for the tragic death of player Tupee Darwoe.”
In the Talk Liberian Football chatroom, Sports Writers Association of Liberia president Varmah Kamara added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the club and the player’s family and friends.”
LFA’s reaction
The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has also expressed its condolences to Paynesville FC, describing the player’s death as “a heartbreaking loss not only for the club and the player’s family, but for the entire football community.”
As a mark of respect for the fallen defender, the LFA ordered a moment of silence before all matches in Round 8 of the First Division on Sunday. “This gesture honors the life and contributions of the deceased player and reflects our shared grief. We stand in solidarity with Paynesville FC, the player’s family, teammates, and supporters during this difficult time,” the statement from Liberia’s Football Association noted.
