Team Liberia Wins Two Medals at African Senior Athletics Championships

Monrovia – Team Liberia delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, winning silver and bronze medals in sprint events.

Liberia secured silver in the women’s 4×100-meter relay after clocking 43.05 seconds in a thrilling final on Friday. The Liberian quartet, led by the nation’s fastest woman, Thelma Davis, alongside Destiny Smith-Barnett, Symone Darius and Chente Clinkscale, pushed Nigeria to the finish line in a highly competitive race.

Nigeria won gold in 42.94 seconds through the quartet of Chigozie Rosemary, Jennifer Chukwuka Obi, Rosemary Chukwuma and Miracle Ezechukwu, while host nation Ghana claimed bronze in 44.85 seconds.

Liberia’s relay team was praised for its smooth baton exchanges, disciplined lane execution and composure under pressure throughout the race.

Earlier in the championships, Davis captured bronze in the women’s 100 meters, finishing third in 11.50 seconds in a tightly contested final where the medal positions were separated by fractions of a second.

In the women’s 200-meter quarterfinals, Darius finished second in her heat in 23.86 seconds behind Nigeria’s Chukwuma, who clocked 23.70 seconds, as both athletes advanced to the semifinals. However, the semifinals had not been completed at press time despite the competition ending Sunday.

Davis’ bronze-medal performance further strengthened her status as one of Liberia’s top sprinters and highlighted the country’s growing competitiveness in continental athletics.

Track analysts and technical observers commended the Liberian relay squad for its efficiency in the exchange zones, often regarded as the decisive element in elite relay competition. The silver-medal finish now ranks among Liberia’s strongest relay achievements in recent international athletics history.

The Liberia Athletics Federation said the results reflect continued progress in the nation’s high-performance athletics program through improved athlete preparation, technical development and increased international exposure.
