MONROVIA — Six people, including two children, were killed late Wednesday night after a house fire tore through a residence on Caldwell Back Road community, authorities confirmed Thursday.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started at around 11 p.m., rapidly engulfing the building and trapping its occupants inside. Residents said the flames consumed the entire structure before firefighters arrived.
“The fire was too strong. By the time help came, everyone inside was already gone,” said one resident, describing the scene as “heartbreaking.”
Community members identified the victims as an elderly woman, two children, and three adults, all of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses said the bodies were burned beyond recognition.
The tragedy marks the second major fire incident in the Caldwell area in less than a week, bringing the total number of deaths from recent fires there to seven, according to residents.
Onlookers expressed grief as classmates of the deceased children broke down in tears near the charred remains of the house.
Authorities say an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire. The Liberia National Fire Service has yet to release its preliminary findings, but neighbors suspect an electrical fault or candle may have sparked the blaze.
