Gbarnga – Maryland County District #3 Representative Austin B. Taylor has pledged over 1.6 million Liberian Dollars (LD) in financial and equipment support to the county’s kickball and football teams.
The announcement was made on Wednesday following Maryland’s victory over County Meet powerhouse Grand Bassa in Gbarnga City.
From the LD$1.6 million pledge, LD$200,000 will be allocated to reward the team for their recent win over Grand Bassa, LD$180,000 for the purchase of jerseys, and LD$1,050,000 will be used to buy 30 pairs of football boots to ensure the team is well-equipped.
Additionally, Representative Taylor pledged LD$150,000 for an anticipated victory against Bong County on Saturday and an additional LD$1,000,000 if the team qualifies for the final.
Speaking with the players, Representative Taylor expressed confidence in their abilities and his belief in a potential qualification on Saturday. “The team has shown great promise, and I am committed to ensuring they have the resources and support needed to secure the trophy for Maryland County,” he stated.
Ms. Vickie Wilson, Chairlady of the County Mobilizing Committee, extended her gratitude to the lawmaker for his leadership and generosity. She reassured him of the team’s dedication to bringing the trophy home. “We will do our best to put smiles on the faces of Marylanders,” she assured the District #3 Representative.
Maryland currently tops Group “A” with four points from two matches played in the group stage of the 2024/2025 National County Sports Meet. The Sunshine Boys, after drawing in their opening fixture, surprisingly defeated crowd favorite Grand Bassa 2-1, opening up the group and taking the qualification race to the final day of preliminary activities.
Wednesday’s result means Maryland will need to avoid defeat against Bong County to advance to the quarterfinals.
