CESTOS, Rivercess County — The Liberia National Red Cross Society has launched an emergency response to support the rebuilding of Bethel Town in Rivercess County after a fire destroyed dozens of homes, leaving more than 150 residents, mostly women and children, displaced.
The March 19 blaze razed 24 homes and 27 kitchens in the Dodian District community, forcing families into overcrowded shelters while others remain exposed to the elements amid growing health risks.
Red Cross officials say immediate assistance will focus on restoring shelter and stabilizing living conditions for affected households.
“Our support is about restoring dignity and helping families recover safely,” said Gregory Blamoh, Chief Executive Officer of the Liberia National Red Cross Society, during a visit to the affected community.
Emergency Shelter and Reconstruction Support
The Red Cross said it will provide each affected household with essential construction materials, including zinc sheets, cement, and nails, to support rebuilding efforts.
In a shift toward more resilient housing, the organization plans to work with residents to transition from traditional mud structures to more durable dirt-brick homes.
To support this effort, the Red Cross will supply equipment such as manual brick-molding machines, wheelbarrows, shovels, and other tools, while engaging local technicians and contractors to guide construction.
Humanitarian Concerns Mount
Displaced families are currently sheltering in a town hall and two surviving houses, with others sleeping outdoors under unsafe and congested conditions.
Aid workers warn that the situation increases the risk of disease outbreaks, including malaria, particularly among vulnerable groups.
Blamoh said the organization is especially concerned about the welfare of women, children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
“These are families who have lost everything and are now exposed to serious risks,” he said, calling for broader support to sustain recovery efforts.
Beyond Relief to Resilience
The Red Cross said its intervention is designed not only to provide immediate relief but to strengthen long-term resilience in the community.
Officials emphasized that rebuilding efforts will focus on safer construction practices and community participation to reduce vulnerability to future disasters.
“This is about building back better and ensuring that recovery leads to stronger, safer homes,” the organization noted.
Call for Broader Support
The Red Cross acknowledged initial support from partners, including the Swedish Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and urged additional organizations and individuals to assist.
“Recovery requires collective effort,” Blamoh said. “We call on partners and stakeholders to stand with Bethel Town as families rebuild their lives.”
Rivercess County Superintendent Byron W. Sahnwea welcomed the intervention, describing it as a critical first step in the recovery process.
“We are deeply grateful for this timely response,” he said. “It brings hope to families who have lost so much, and we are committed to working together to ensure its success.”
