MONROVIA, Liberia — The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) has sharply criticized comments attributed to the Unity Party’s national chairman suggesting that the future of the opposition lies in aligning with the ruling party for employment opportunities.
In a statement issued over the weekend, the PLP described the remarks as dismissive, misguided and reflective of what it called “a troubling lack of national vision.”
Defending the Role of Opposition
The PLP argued that Liberia’s democracy depends on a vibrant opposition grounded in accountability and constructive criticism — not political inducements or absorption into the ruling establishment.
According to the party, its political mission is anchored in advancing the interests of Liberians rather than pursuing appointments within government.
“The People’s Liberation Party remains firmly committed to the Liberian people’s demand for meaningful change, transparency, and sustainable development,” the statement said.
“Our focus is on empowering Liberians, creating opportunities, and ensuring that governance works for the ordinary citizen — not on securing positions within government.”
Critique of Economic Management
The opposition party further contended that the Unity Party-led administration has struggled to confront mounting economic pressures facing ordinary citizens.
Rising living costs, unemployment and limited access to essential services remain urgent challenges, the PLP said, calling for practical and immediate policy responses.
Rather than extending what it described as veiled threats or job offers to opposition figures, the party urged the ruling establishment to concentrate on delivering measurable outcomes in critical sectors.
“We challenge the Unity Party to redirect its attention toward addressing pressing national issues such as economic growth, healthcare delivery, education reform, and job creation for the broader population,” the statement emphasized. “Liberians deserve policies that improve their lives — not political rhetoric.”
Reaffirming Responsible Opposition
The PLP reiterated its commitment to serving as a responsible opposition force focused on holding government accountable while offering viable policy alternatives.
The statement concluded with a call for issue-based governance and respectful political engagement, stressing that Liberia’s future must be built on sound policies, inclusive development and genuine service to the people.
