PAYNESVILLE — Mayor Robert S. Bestman II on Wednesday declared Paynesville Football Club the “Official Football Team of the City of Paynesville” during a meeting with club president Hilary Sackie.
Bestman praised the club as a symbol of unity, hard work and community pride, urging residents to rally behind the team as other major cities do with their local clubs.
“Today, we celebrate not just a football club, but a symbol of unity, hard work and dedication that embodies the spirit of Paynesville,” Bestman said.
Sackie thanked the city for the recognition, saying the designation will inspire the team to deepen community ties and strive for greater achievements.
“This recognition motivates us to strive harder, build stronger community ties and bring pride to Paynesville through football,” Sackie said.
Founded in 2008 as Reeves Football Club, the team was rebranded in 2013 as Paynesville FC to better represent the city and engage residents. The club earned promotion to the Liberian Football Association First Division in 2023 after climbing through the lower leagues.
In its debut top-flight season, Paynesville FC won the LFA Orange Knockout Cup and represented Liberia in the Confederation of African Football Inter-Club competition, winning three matches but falling short of the group stage.
The club finished eighth in the 2024-25 LFA season and also competed in the inaugural Bettomax offseason tournament.
Paynesville FC’s stated goals include becoming the country’s top club, offering opportunities for young athletes and keeping youth engaged in positive activities to contribute to national development.
