MONROVIA — Buses have made 169 trips to Liberia’s southeastern counties and carried 12,461 passengers over the past year on a route where rainy-season travel once forced commuters to cross into Ivory Coast to reach home, the National Transit Authority said Friday, marking a year since the service began.
The route opened July 25, 2025, and runs to Grand Gedeh, River Gee and Maryland. Maryland accounted for most of the traffic, with 8,107 passengers. River Gee recorded 3,221 and Grand Gedeh 1,133. NTA said 983 children rode free under its Free Rider Policy, a count it keeps separate from the 12,461.
Managing Director Edmund Forh thanked passengers at an anniversary program at the authority’s head office and urged them to report complaints and misconduct to management, saying public feedback is needed to improve service and enforce accountability.
Forh said NTA plans to extend the service to Sinoe, Grand Kru and River Cess once road conditions allow regular operations, and that the authority is preparing to introduce cargo truck services to move goods and construction materials across the country. He gave no date for either.
Deputy Managing Director for Administration Noah Z. Gibson and other senior officials attended, along with passengers.
