MONROVIA, Liberia — The family of late President Samuel Kanyon Doe has strongly denounced recent public allegations made by Veronica Mamie Doe, calling them “false,” “treacherous,” and a threat to national reconciliation.
In a press statement issued Wednesday, family elders—including Lucy Doe Pennue, Susay Doe Tody, and Theresa Doe Joloka—rejected Veronica’s claims against Senator Zoe Emmanuel Pennue, Mrs. Lucy Doe Pennue, and the late Chayee Zoe Doe. The statement, signed by the elders of the Doe and Zuach clans of Tuzon, Grand Gedeh County, accused Veronica of launching a personal vendetta that distorts the legacy of the late president and threatens family and national unity.
“These erroneous claims and allegations are extremely treacherous,” the statement read. “They are not only hurtful and harmful to our family but completely untrue.”
The statement follows a wave of controversy sparked by Veronica’s appearance on Spoon TV, where she accused several Doe family members of mistreating the late former First Lady Nancy B. Doe and questioned their integrity. The family called the remarks “self-serving noise,” labeling Veronica an “outlier” whose views do not reflect the legacy of President Doe.
Tensions Escalate Over Rejected Condolences
Tensions grew after Veronica rejected a condolence gesture from former President George Weah—including 50 bags of rice, two cows, and US$5,000—following the death of former First Lady Nancy Doe. She accused both Weah and Senator Pennue of mistreatment and disrespect toward her late mother.
The family’s statement described the rejection as “unfortunate and politically charged,” saying it added fuel to an already sensitive period of mourning.
Damaging Private Messages Go Public
Further escalating the controversy, private messages allegedly between Veronica and her sister Kathy Doe (known publicly as Jewlio Doe) surfaced on social media. In the texts, Veronica lashed out with shocking accusations, including charges of witchcraft and incestuous conduct involving Senator Pennue.
“You are a witch. PERIOD!” Veronica reportedly wrote. “Go back to your cousin Zoe and let him sleep with you again… Very soon that too will be exposed.”
In response, Kathy publicly posted a lengthy Facebook rebuttal accusing Veronica of isolating their mother and manipulating her final months.
“For the past 6 months to a year, my oldest sister Veronica ‘Mamie’ Doe has kept our mother completely isolated and secluded from her children and family,” Kathy wrote. “She accuses everyone of witchcraft when she cannot control them.”
Family Urges Peace, National Focus
Despite the bitter feud, the Doe family urged Liberians to ignore what they called “distractions” and instead focus on national healing.
“We urge the people of Liberia not to be swayed by the noise and confusion being circulated by this individual seeking attention,” the statement said. “Let us not allow distraction to take precedence over what truly matters: the collective healing, peace, and unity of our country.”
They reaffirmed their commitment to unity and national reconciliation, calling on all Liberians to move forward together.
“This time of bereavement calls for reflection and healing, not division. We extend our hand in partnership to all Liberians for the good of our beloved nation.”
