MONROVIA, Liberia — The family of the late former First Lady Nancy B. Doe has returned a condolence package presented by former President George Weah during a visit to their Sinkor residence on Sunday.
The package — which included two cows, 50 bags of rice, and US$5,000 in cash — was returned to the former president following his visit on June 8 to express sympathy after Mrs. Doe’s passing on May 21.
The family has not issued a formal statement explaining the decision to reject the items.
Weah, during the visit, offered words of comfort and described the gesture as a sign of respect for the former First Lady’s legacy. However, his condolence was met with unease by some family members, particularly amid public criticisms from Mamie Veronica Doe, the daughter of the deceased.
Mamie Doe has previously accused Weah of neglecting her mother during his six-year presidency, alleging that despite her status as a former First Lady, Mrs. Doe received no meaningful support from the Weah administration.
It remains unclear whether the family’s decision to return the package is directly connected to Mamie Doe’s earlier statements.
