Monrovia – A group of patriotic Liberians under the banner New Matadi Association-USA has distributed rice to over 60 residents of the New Matadi Community in Sinkor, Monrovia.
The U.S.-based association comprises several diaspora Liberians who once resided in the New Matadi Community before traveling abroad. The group is led by Alex Teah, who oversees activities from the United States, while Adam Togba manages its efforts in Liberia.
During the distribution event held in the community on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, the association’s Focal Person, Mr. Adam Togba, described the initiative as a holiday gesture aimed at assisting senior citizens, people with disabilities, and widows, providing them with some relief during the festive season.
He emphasized that while the organization acknowledges the enormous economic challenges faced by struggling citizens, including youth, the U.S.-based members felt an urgent need to assist elderly residents, particularly women who no longer have helpers or husbands to support their families.
“The New Matadi Association – USA is committed to improving the lives of residents and looks forward to more humanitarian efforts in 2025,” Mr. Togba noted. He added that the group aims to positively impact their former community in other ways in the future.
Reflecting on the association’s past initiatives, Mr. Togba recalled their support during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in Liberia. At that time, the group distributed rice, oil, and preventive materials to hundreds of New Matadi residents, offering critical relief during a difficult period.
Wishing the beneficiaries a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Mr. Togba encouraged them to remember the association members in their prayers. “We wanted to share some joy and let the people back home know we are thinking of them,” he said.
Alex Teah, who oversees the group’s U.S.-based activities, echoed similar sentiments. “The holidays are a time for giving, and this is our way of giving back to our community,” he stated. Mr. Teah also expressed gratitude to members in the United States for their support and encouraged them to contribute further through scholarships and other programs. “This is a meaningful way to show love and support to those in need,” he added.
One of the beneficiaries, Esther Dennis, lauded the association for their thoughtfulness in remembering the senior citizens they left behind in the community.
“As I stand here, my whole side (right) is affected by hypertension, and it has even affected my voice,” Esther said. “They came to my place and asked for the old folks, and now this has become a reality as we receive this gift.”
Another beneficiary, Esther Greene, expressed similar gratitude. “Our children, who think about us during this festive season, may God open doors for them. The place they took this from to bless us, God should multiply it,” she said.
She pledged never to forget the group in her prayers and wished for them to continue being a blessing to their community.
