SANNIQUILLIE — The National Elections Commission (NEC) on Wednesday declared government-backed candidate Kortor Sehwongbay Kwagrue winner of the District 5 by-election, lauding voters and stakeholders for ensuring a peaceful process.
At the NEC Upper Nimba Magisterial Office in Sanniquillie, Chairperson Davidetta Browne Lansanah commended voters, political parties, security forces, the media, and election staff for their cooperation during the Aug. 12 polls.

“The NEC is pleased to report that, generally, the District 5 Representative by-election was conducted under a peaceful atmosphere,” Lansanah said, noting that voting was carried out in full compliance with electoral laws and procedures. She said the commission recorded no incidents of violence, disruptions or violations of voters’ rights.
Kwagrue, representing the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction and endorsed by the ruling Unity Party, captured 4,795 votes — 31.39% of the total — defeating independent candidate Bories B. Barlea, who received 3,938 votes, or 26.78%. Ten candidates, including one woman, contested the seat.
Lansanah highlighted the relatively high turnout and strong female participation, attributing it to increased awareness campaigns encouraging women’s involvement in politics. She credited the smooth conduct of the election to voter education efforts, logistical preparation, and coordination among security agencies and the media.
