Paynesville – Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) has welcomed a high-level basketball delegation to Liberia as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen youth empowerment and grassroots basketball development across the country.
The delegation, led by FIBA Zone-3 President Retired Col. Samuel Ahmedu, paid a courtesy visit to Youth and Sports Minister Atty. Cornelia W. Kruah on May 6 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.
Discussions during the meeting centered on the growth and development of grassroots basketball in Liberia.
Also accompanying the delegation were Jordan Nwora Foundation head Alex Nwora and Liberian-born basketball coach Frederick Lymas, who coaches at Shawnee State University in the United States.
Speaking during the meeting, Kruah thanked the delegation for selecting Liberia as part of its youth basketball development initiative. She described the program as a major opportunity for young Liberian athletes aspiring to pursue professional and international basketball careers.
“This initiative is not only about basketball development, but also about inspiring hope, discipline and opportunity among our young people,” Kruah said. “We are grateful to the Jordan Nwora Foundation, FIBA Zone-3 and all partners involved for investing in the future of Liberian youth.”
Kruah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting sports development programs that empower young people and create pathways for international exposure, scholarships and career advancement.
She also pledged the ministry’s continued collaboration with the Jordan Nwora Foundation and FIBA Zone-3 leadership to ensure talented Liberian athletes benefit from future opportunities, mentorship programs and international basketball exposure.
The delegation is in Liberia to conduct a basketball clinic for grassroots athletes ages 14 to 17. The clinic, which runs from May 9-12, is expected to provide participants with technical training, mentorship and exposure to international basketball standards.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports said it remains committed to working with national and international partners to promote youth empowerment, talent development and sporting excellence across Liberia.
