SALALA – Bong County District 6 Representative Moima Briggs Mensah has donated 70 bags of rice and L$70,000 to Muslim residents of Salala District, providing support during the holy month of Ramadan.
The distribution took place Monday at a local community hall, attended by imams, community leaders, and residents. The gesture is intended to ease the financial burden for families observing the month-long fast, a period marked by prayer, reflection, and acts of charity.
Speaking at the event, Mensah said, “Ramadan is a time to reflect on compassion and community. Supporting our Muslim brothers and sisters during this sacred period is part of my responsibility as their representative. It is important that we stand together in both faith and service to the people.”
Local Islamic leaders expressed gratitude for the donation. Imam Abdul Karim described the contribution as “helpful for families facing high living costs” and acknowledged the lawmaker’s responsiveness to community needs. Other residents noted that while the gesture addresses immediate needs, it also reflects a broader commitment to inclusivity and social cohesion.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide through fasting from sunrise to sunset. The month emphasizes prayer, self-reflection, and charity. In Liberia, the holiday is celebrated in both urban and rural communities, with families gathering for pre-dawn meals and evening Iftar, the meal that breaks the fast. Mosques frequently organize outreach programs to provide meals for those unable to afford them.
The observance of Ramadan in Liberia also provides an opportunity for inter-community engagement. Political and civic leaders often participate in programs to reinforce social cohesion and demonstrate support for citizens across religious lines.
Residents at the Salala event praised Mensah for her consistent engagement with constituents and her willingness to address their needs regardless of religious affiliation.
“This donation is timely and meaningful,” said one community member. “It helps families during a period that is important for faith and family.”
Mensah’s initiative highlights the practical impact of elected officials supporting citizens during religious observances, while reinforcing the role of local leadership in fostering community solidarity and addressing immediate needs.
