Gbarnga, Bong County —The Ministry of Health has donated a colposcope machine to C.B. Dunbar Comprehensive Hospital in Gbarnga, Bong County, in what authorities describe as a major boost to womens healthcare services in the region.
The medical equipment was formally delivered on Monday, March 2, 2026, by Mr. Wymah S. Youyoubon, Director of the Healthcare Technology Management Unit (Biomedical) at the Ministry of Health. The donation forms part of a broader government effort to decentralize specialized diagnostic services and reduce the burden on referral hospitals in Monrovia.
A colposcope is a specialized medical device used to closely examine a womans cervix, vagina and vulva for signs of disease, particularly when Pap smear results return abnormal findings. The machine is equipped with a bright light and magnifying lens that allow physicians to clearly observe changes in tissues without inserting the instrument into the body. Health experts say the availability of such equipment is critical in the early detection of cervical cancer and other gynecological conditions.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mr. Youyoubon disclosed that similar colposcope machines have also been donated to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center and Redemption Hospital in Montserrado County. He emphasized that the Ministry remains committed to strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the country, particularly in counties outside the capital.
This intervention is part of our ongoing effort to ensure that quality diagnostic services are not limited to Monrovia,Mr. Youyoubon said. Women in Bong and surrounding counties deserve timely access to screening and early diagnosis without having to travel long distances.
Receiving the equipment on behalf of the hospital, Dr. Moses Y. Beyan, Medical Director of C.B. Dunbar Comprehensive Hospital, expressed profound gratitude to Health Minister Louis Kpoto and the Government of Liberia for what he described as a critical intervention for womens health.
Dr. Beyan noted that cervical cancer remains one of the leading health threats facing women in Liberia, largely due to late detection and limited access to screening services. He stressed that the arrival of the colposcope will significantly enhance the hospitals capacity to provide early screening, diagnosis and timely treatment.
This equipment will strengthen our fight against cervical cancer and other related conditions,Dr. Beyan said. Early detection saves lives, and with this machine, we can now provide specialized diagnostic services right here in Gbarnga.
The medical director further highlighted ongoing improvements at the facility, noting that since the ascendency of the Boakai-Koung administration and under the hospitals new management led by Mr. Enoch Kermue Darwolo Morris Sr., C.B. Dunbar Comprehensive Hospital has witnessed notable advancements in infrastructure, equipment acquisition and service delivery.
He added that the colposcope is being installed alongside a newly acquired X-ray machine, which the hospital expects to put into operation in the coming days. The combined addition of the two machines is expected to significantly expand the hospitals diagnostic capabilities.
For years, patients requiring specialized diagnostic services were often referred to Monrovia or Ganta in Nimba County — a situation that imposed financial hardship on families and delayed critical care.
Officials believe the addition of the new equipment will help reduce referrals to Monrovia and Ganta in Nimba County, easing the financial burden on patients and improving access to specialized healthcare services closer to home.
