Harper, Maryland County – Maryland County Superintendent Hon. Nathaniel S. Toe Jr. has pledged a new era of development and accountability, promising to restore dignity, improve public services, strengthen education, and protect Liberian-owned land during his official welcoming ceremony in Harper.
Speaking before citizens, traditional leaders, local officials, and members of the clergy, Superintendent Toe outlined a broad development agenda centered on education, agriculture, vocational and technical training, youth empowerment, and infrastructure development.
He announced plans to work closely with the administration of William V.S. Tubman University to establish Graduate School and Professional Studies programs in Maryland County. The initiative, he said, will be pursued in collaboration with members of the county legislative caucus and local traditional leaders.
On land ownership, Superintendent Toe strongly criticized the growing practice of Liberians allocating large portions of their land to Burkinabè nationals while retaining only a small percentage for themselves. He declared that such arrangements would no longer be tolerated under his administration.
“The Boakai-Koung Administration is committed to protecting Liberia’s land for Liberians,” Toe said, promising to engage communities in ending the practice through dialogue and enforcement of existing laws.
The superintendent also pledged to negotiate with the Episcopal Church to reopen Bishop Ferguson High School, a move he said would help address the shortage of secondary education opportunities in Harper and surrounding towns and villages.
Additionally, he promised to complete teachers’ quarters projects initiated in Rock Town and Fish Town and expand access to high school education in underserved communities.
On infrastructure, Toe vowed to continue construction of city halls in Glofaken, Karloken, and Barrobo Statutory Districts while also beginning early preparations for Maryland County’s participation in the upcoming National County Sports Meet.
As part of the sports initiative, he introduced Emmanuel Barford, Amos Ebo Smith, and Theophilus Geekor, whom he described as members of the county’s sports leadership. According to Toe, the team has already secured footballs and other training equipment to begin preparations.
Earlier, during an intercessory service held at Mount Scott United Methodist Church on Maryland Avenue in Harper, Rev. Father Ernesty T. Johnson reminded the superintendent that public office is a call to serve humanity rather than an opportunity to be served.
He assured Superintendent Toe of the full support of the Christian Ministers Association but urged him to govern inclusively without regard to religious affiliation, political differences, or ethnic background.
Representatives of the county’s chiefs, elders, women, and youth organizations also pledged their support, promising to work closely with the new superintendent provided he remains accessible, transparent, and embraces all citizens as members of one family.
