HARPER, Maryland County — Residents in Maryland County are celebrating long-awaited relief after the dedication of modern sanitation facilities built in honor of the former Senator H. Dan Morais, a project his family says continues his legacy of community service.
The initiative, spearheaded by his son, Patrick Morais, delivered 16 flush toilets across four communities — Jehploke and Mah Town in Hoffman Station Township, Wāh Hòdō Town, and Harper’s Hance Street neighborhood. The facilities are being hailed as a major step forward in a county where inadequate sanitation has long fueled disease outbreaks and compromised safety.
“This project brings dignity to our people, especially women,” said Jehploke community chairman Jerry Koto. “It protects privacy and honors our traditions.”
A Legacy of Service
At the dedication, Patrick Morais said the facilities reflect his father’s belief that development begins with health.
“Good health starts with good sanitation practices,” he told residents. “My father believed in projects that made a real difference in people’s lives. I am committed to continuing that legacy.”
Patrick pledged to expand on other initiatives left unfinished by Senator Morais, including bridges and additional latrines in underserved areas.
Symbol of Continuity
For residents, the toilets represent more than infrastructure — they symbolize dignity and the continuation of a vision. Community members said the intervention not only reduces open defecation but also restores a sense of pride and care often missing in neglected rural communities.
“This is life-changing for us,” one resident said. “It shows that his legacy is still alive.”
The facilities, residents say, now stand as a bridge between generations — linking the vision of the former senator to the service of his son, and offering Maryland County renewed hope for healthier, safer communities.
