Liberian Embassy in Ghana hails peaceful diaspora elections, urges unity and development

ACCRA, Ghana — The Embassy of the Republic of Liberia near Accra has lauded Liberians residing in Ghana for the peaceful and transparent conduct of their just-ended community elections, describing the process as a shining example of democratic values in the diaspora.

In a statement issued Thursday, July 24, the Embassy extended formal congratulations to all participants, including candidates, voters, observers, and the organizing committee, for what it called “a well-organized and commendable electoral process.”

“Your collective efforts have once again demonstrated the resilience, unity, and civic maturity of Liberians living abroad,” the statement read.

The Liberian community in Ghana went to the polls on Friday, July 19, at the Embassy compound in Accra to elect a new leadership team for a two-year term. Positions contested included President, Vice President, and Secretary General.

The Embassy noted that Liberians from across the country turned out in significant numbers to participate in the process, which was overseen by the Elections Organizing Committee with Embassy support.

Describing the election as peaceful and transparent, the Embassy emphasized that the outcome reflects the community’s commitment to unity, representation, and good governance.

Originally scheduled for July 26, the inauguration of the new leadership has been postponed to Saturday, August 23. The change, according to the Embassy, is in line with efforts to observe Liberia’s 178th Independence Day in a more subdued and reflective manner this year.

The Embassy also applauded the courage of all those who contested, whether successful or not, and acknowledged the silent support of others who may not have been physically present.

“To those who couldn’t make it for the elections for whatever reasons, we believe you were present in your support to the process,” the Embassy said.

Looking ahead, the Embassy urged the newly elected leaders and the entire community to prioritize reconciliation, collaboration, and collective development.

“The Embassy remains committed to supporting all-inclusive, development-driven initiatives aimed at uniting and empowering Liberians in Ghana,” the statement added. “Together, let us continue to build a stronger, more connected Liberian community.”
