MONROVIA — Liberian police on Saturday arrested the former commissioner of West Point Township during a raid at the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) headquarters, where officers discovered two rifles inside a residence, authorities said.
Police identified the official as former Commissioner Wea, who was found inside a building after court sheriffs repeatedly failed to open the door. Witnesses said Wea appeared at a window and told officers he had been asleep, only waking when he heard the noise of sheriffs attempting to force entry.
Wea claimed a colleague had taken the house keys, leaving him locked inside. After breaking open the gate, police handcuffed him and took him into custody.
About 15 minutes later, officers called in journalists to witness the recovery of two rifles from the compound, which were displayed to the media at the scene.
Meanwhile, demolition of structures on the property continued as part of the government’s court-ordered eviction of the CDC from the site.
It was not immediately clear what charges Wea would face. Police said investigations are ongoing.
