MONROVIA – Former Vice President and political leader of the National Patriotic Party (NPP), Madam Jewel Howard Taylor, has broken her silence on persistent rumors suggesting her party had severed political ties with the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).
Speaking Saturday, October 18, at the groundbreaking ceremony for the CDC’s new national headquarters in Congo Town, Monrovia, Madam Taylor dismissed claims of division, affirming that the NPP remains fully aligned with the CDC’s political ideology and long-standing coalition spirit.
“You will hear plenty of rumors that the NPP is here; the NPP is there,” she told the cheering crowd. “We are part and parcel of this process and will make our full contribution.”
Background: NPP’s Role in the Coalition
The NPP is one of the three founding parties—alongside the CDC and the National People’s Democratic Party (NPDP)—that formed the Coalition for Democratic Change in 2017, which propelled George Manneh Weah to the presidency with Jewel Howard Taylor as his vice president.
However, following the coalition’s defeat in the 2023 presidential election, political observers speculated that the alliance had crumbled, with the NPP allegedly distancing itself from the CDC amid internal disagreements and shifting political loyalties.
Madam Taylor’s public appearance and remarks, therefore, marked a significant reaffirmation of the NPP’s partnership and shared political destiny with the CDC.
“A Renewal of Friendships”
In what she described as more than a political statement, Madam Taylor announced an initial contribution of US$5,000 toward the construction of the new CDC headquarters — a gesture that drew loud cheers and applause from thousands of partisans, executives, and guests.
“For me, today is more than just a groundbreaking — it is a renewal of friendships,” she declared. “This event strengthens our collaboration and serves as a major path toward a united opposition community ahead of the 2029 elections.”
Her remarks underscored a renewed effort among former coalition partners to rebuild unity and consolidate the opposition bloc in preparation for future political contests.
Commitment to “The People’s House”
Madam Taylor pledged that the NPP would continue to support the CDC until the new headquarters is completed and dedicated, describing the project as a symbol of collective resilience and people-centered politics.
“Mr. President, we’re honored to be part of this occasion — and congratulations to you,” she said, addressing former President Weah, the CDC’s political leader. “This new home will stand as the people’s house.”
A Show of Strength and Solidarity
The colorful event drew thousands of supporters, legislators, and current and former government officials, many of whom made material and financial contributions — including bags of cement, cash donations, and building supplies — to accelerate the construction process.
The occasion was marked by jubilant singing, solidarity messages, and renewed political energy, signaling what party stalwarts described as a “revival of the coalition spirit” that once brought the CDC to power.
