Liberia hosts ICTA2025: Global experts unite to tackle Africa’s transport challenges

MONROVIA – Hundreds of international transportation experts, policymakers, academics, and engineers will converge in Liberia from July 21 to 23, 2025, for the 10th International Conference on Sustainable Transportation in Africa (ICTA2025) — a pivotal event aimed at advancing resilient infrastructure and accessibility across the continent.

The conference, which will take place at the TIME Royal Ambassador Hotel in Margibi County, is being jointly organized by Liberia’s Ministries of Public Works and Transport, in collaboration with the Global Transportation Professional Networking Group and several international partners, including the International Road Federation (IRF), Morgan State University, the Regional Transport Research and Education Centre in Kumasi (TRECK), the National Road Fund, and the Engineering Society of Liberia.

Held under the theme “Resilient Transport Infrastructure and Improved Accessibility for Sustainable Development,” ICTA2025 is expected to bring together over 200 delegates from across Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Asia, and the host country, Liberia. The conference will foster international collaboration, showcase cutting-edge research, and promote innovative solutions to some of the continent’s most pressing transportation challenges.

Liberia’s Public Works Minister Roland Layfette Giddings and Transport Minister Sirleaf Ralph Tyler are among the headline speakers. They will be joined by a roster of international experts, including Dr. Emeka Agbasi, CEO of Nigeria’s Federal Roads Maintenance Agency; Susanna Zammataro, Director General of the IRF in Switzerland; and Professor Charles Adams, Director at TRECK and associate professor at Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The three-day event will open with a plenary session featuring speeches and technical presentations on global road safety, sustainable urban mobility, and infrastructure resilience. Participants will explore issues such as intelligent transportation systems, road asset management, climate adaptation, policy and regulatory frameworks, and the role of technology in solving Africa’s mobility crisis.

In addition to plenary and technical sessions, the conference will include professional workshops on artificial intelligence in road condition monitoring, satellite-based asset assessments, and objective frameworks for pavement management. Case studies from Liberia, Ghana, Uganda, Nigeria, Zambia, and other countries will offer practical insight into emerging models and regional best practices.

Key discussions will also address equity in transportation, with presentations examining gender mobility gaps in urban settings, the use of waste plastics in road construction, and the resilience of infrastructure in flood-prone areas. Scholars and researchers will assess progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, with a special focus on climate impacts, safety innovation, and funding mechanisms.

On July 23, the final day of the conference, delegates will participate in a technical field trip to national infrastructure projects, followed by a sightseeing visit to Liberia’s National Park, offering a blend of professional learning and cultural exchange.

Dr. Simon Oladele, ICTA International Coordinator and professor at Morgan State University in the United States, described Liberia’s hosting of the 10th edition of the conference as both historic and timely. He emphasized the importance of regional knowledge-sharing and the need to modernize transportation systems in a rapidly urbanizing and climate-vulnerable continent.
