Monrovia – The Audit Follow-up Unit of the General Auditing Commission (GAC) has concluded a week-long strategic workshop in Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County, adopting new measures to strengthen enforcement and ensure that audit recommendations translate into tangible reforms across Liberia’s public sector. The audit agency of Liberia released details of the workshop on its official verified Facebook handle.
The workshop, held from February 16–20, 2026, focused on defining priorities for Phase Three of the Unit’s activities, covering January through October 2026. Participants reviewed implementation progress from earlier phases and developed strategies to enhance coordination among key stakeholders, with the goal of translating audit recommendations into measurable benchmarks.
Held under the theme “Enhance Follow-Up and Enforcement of Audit Recommendations,” the gathering aimed to strengthen monitoring mechanisms, improve compliance-tracking systems, and address bottlenecks that have historically slowed the implementation of audit findings.
According to organizers, the exercise consolidated outcomes from Phase One and Phase Two of previous engagements. During those earlier phases, implementation gaps were identified, and actionable timelines were established for ministries, agencies, and commissions to address audit queries and correct systemic weaknesses.
Building on those foundations, the Phase Three strategy is expected to sharpen accountability processes and ensure that audit findings contribute meaningfully to strengthening public-sector governance. Discussions during the workshop also focused on assessing challenges in enforcing audit recommendations and clarifying roles and responsibilities for the upcoming implementation period.
At the close of the workshop, the Head of the Follow-Up Unit, Mr. Anthony Henry Jr., said the new strategy identified critical areas for improvement and set realistic timelines to guide the Unit’s operations. “This strategy provides a clearer roadmap for follow-up and enforcement,” Henry noted, emphasizing that effective coordination and clear responsibilities are essential to closing compliance gaps.
The General Auditing Commission, Liberia’s supreme audit institution, plays a pivotal role in promoting transparency and accountability in the management of public resources. Through its Audit Follow-up Unit, the Commission monitors the extent to which government institutions implement audit recommendations and take corrective action.
Professionals following GAC activities say the success of the newly adopted Phase Three plan will depend largely on sustained political will, inter-agency cooperation, and the consistent enforcement of compliance measures.
