MONROVIA — The Liberia National Fire Service is calling on the National Legislature to increase its budget allocation to help expand operations and improve emergency response capabilities, particularly in Montserrado County and surrounding areas.
The appeal was made by LNFS Director Warsuwah Barvoul during a ceremony Monday at the Executive Pavilion in Monrovia, marking International Firefighters Day. Addressing attendees, Barvoul emphasized the urgent need for more fire stations, saying additional facilities would reduce response times and strengthen the agency’s capacity to protect lives and property.
“The establishment of more fire stations across Montserrado and beyond is no longer a luxury but a necessity,” Barvoul said. “Timely intervention during fire emergencies often means the difference between life and death, or the loss and preservation of valuable property.”
Barvoul also highlighted concerns over firefighter welfare and urged the government to improve salaries and benefits.
“Our men and women put their lives on the line every day. Improved wages and incentives will not only boost morale but also reinforce their commitment to duty,” she said.
In a show of legislative support, Montserrado County Sen. Abraham Darius Dillon commended the LNFS for its dedication to public service. He noted that the agency’s annual budget had recently increased from L$2 million to L$4 million, resulting in improvements in service delivery.
Dillon also used the occasion to encourage the public to adopt fire prevention practices. He urged citizens to use safer building materials and embrace modern household habits that reduce fire risks, particularly in densely populated areas.
The International Firefighters Day celebration brought together government officials, LNFS personnel, and members of the public. The event honored the bravery and service of firefighters in Liberia and around the world, while renewing calls for greater investment in fire safety and emergency preparedness.
As fire incidents continue to threaten communities, LNFS authorities say they hope increased legislative backing will help them meet growing challenges and ensure a safer environment for all Liberians.
