MONROVIA, Liberia — The Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo, on August 12 presented Liberia’s draft carbon policy to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai at the Executive Mansion, marking a key milestone in the nation’s climate law development and preparation for entry into the global carbon market.
The draft policy is part of a broader legislative framework intended to help Liberia access climate finance while ensuring sustainable and equitable management of its natural resources.
The EPA will next convene a National Dialogue on August 21–22 in Ganta, Nimba County, bringing together government ministries and agencies, civil society organizations, academic institutions and development partners. The two-day consultation will allow stakeholders to review the draft, provide feedback and make recommendations ahead of formal validation.
President Boakai praised the EPA, the National Climate Change Steering Committee and Secretariat, the Board of Directors, and the Policy Council for advancing Liberia’s climate agenda. He expressed confidence that the final policy will set a solid foundation for transparency, accountability and fair benefit-sharing with forest-dependent communities that play a central role in conservation.
The EPA urged all stakeholders to remain engaged in shaping a policy that balances environmental protection, economic growth and the rights of local communities.
