LFA Proposes Bigger Committee, Expanded Leagues Ahead of Friday Congress

CONGO TOWN — The Liberia Football Association’s Executive Committee has proposed a series of amendments to the association’s statutes ahead of the LFA Ordinary Congress scheduled for Thursday, May 15, including expanding the governing body’s own membership and growing both the First and Second Division leagues.

Among the proposed changes is an increase in Executive Committee seats from 15 to 17. The committee is also seeking congressional approval to expand the First Division League from 14 to 18 clubs and the Second Division League from 16 to 18 clubs. In women’s football, the ExCom is proposing an expansion of the Women’s Upper League and the establishment of a Women’s Second Division League as part of broader efforts to strengthen the domestic game.

The proposals are expected to be presented to Congress delegates for approval on Friday, immediately before the LFA elections — a sequencing that has drawn criticism from at least one senior football stakeholder.

Senior Female Professional Club President Emmett Stages Glassco said the timing is wrong. Speaking on State Radio, Glassco acknowledged that the proposed amendments could benefit football development but argued that stakeholders have not been given adequate time to review and fully understand the documents. She called on the LFA to pull the proposals from Friday’s congress agenda and urged delegates not to approve them at this stage.

The LFA goes to elections Friday at Paynesville City Hall with 27 candidates vying for various positions. Incumbent President Mustapha Raji will contest unopposed after the Independent Elections Committee disqualified two aspirants, Cassell Kuoh and Sekou Keita, on eligibility grounds.

The committee said its decision to declare Kuoh ineligible was based on Articles 45.4 and 58.1 of the LFA’s 2018 amended statutes. “Articles 45.4 and 58.1 of the Liberia Football Association Statutes establish strict eligibility, or integrity clauses, for candidates running for president, vice presidents and executive committee members,” the Independent Elections Committee said in its statement.
