MONROVIA — Rep. Yekeh Kolubah and his lawyers abruptly walked out of a House committee hearing Wednesday after lawmakers refused to grant a five-day adjournment the defense said it needed to obtain evidence and review procedural rules, throwing the proceedings into disarray.
The walkout unfolded shortly after the hearing resumed from a 30-minute recess. Kolubah appeared before the committee alongside attorneys Cllr. Cabineh Ja’neh, Cllr. Moriah Yeakula and Cllr. Jonathan Massaquoi, who had petitioned for the extension to allow time to gather evidence and study the House rules governing the proceedings.
The committee rejected the request, saying it could not afford the delay and directed the hearing to continue.
Speaking for the defense, Yeakula said proceeding without the requested materials would compromise her client’s right to a fair process.
“We cannot proceed with this hearing if we are not provided the evidence and the relevant House rules we requested to adequately prepare our defense,” she said. “Our client is not being given due process under these circumstances.”
The legal team then rose and exited the hearing room in unison. Kolubah followed moments later.
“Since you didn’t give my lawyers the chance and I’m being left alone, I will walk out,” he told the committee before leaving.
Committee members rejected the due process argument, insisting the proceedings already met the required standard.
“The process that is ongoing is already a due process,” committee member Mannah Bishop Johnson said, dismissing the defense’s concerns.
It was not immediately clear whether the committee would proceed in Kolubah’s absence or move to compel his return.
