Monrovia – Embattled House Speaker Cllr. Fonati Koffa has demanded that police authorities dig deeper into the December 18, 2024, Capitol Building fire investigation, questioning why key individuals, including Representative Richard Koon, have not been summoned for questioning. Speaking after a grueling two-hour interrogation at the Liberia National Police headquarters, Koffa stressed that critical elements of the probe remain ignored.
“I felt it was my responsibility to cooperate fully with the authorities, and I am glad to have been cleared of any wrongdoing,” Koffa told reporters. “However, I do believe there are some important elements of the investigation that need more attention. Yet, it seems that the investigation has not given proper attention to the people who were there, including Koon. This is a critical detail that I believe should not be overlooked. I don’t want to speculate or accuse anyone hastily, but there are pieces of the puzzle that still need to be examined.”
His arrival at the police headquarters was met with an overwhelming show of force. Armed officers stood guard at every corner, while Koffa’s supporters, many dressed in CDC colors, roared their battle cries. The embattled speaker, flanked by his legal team and senior party members, walked through the compound under the watchful eyes of security personnel, their presence an unmistakable indication of the political weight of the moment.
Koffa’s questioning focused on his social media post about the controversial Alamo issue, as well as the alleged involvement of his staff in the arson attack. Investigators also pressed him on links between Representatives Dixon Seboe, Abu Kamara, Frank Saah Foko, Marvin J. Cole, and the suspects charged in the case.
Despite a U.S. fire investigator’s report supporting the findings of the Liberian National Fire Service and the police, Koffa dismissed the results, asserting that the probe lacked credibility. “I don’t trust the police investigators,” he said, “and I don’t trust that report because the investigation was done based on friendship.”
While the police have arrested and jailed four suspects in connection to the arson, there is no indication that Koffa or any lawmakers will face charges. However, he confirmed that his engagement with investigators is not yet over, though no date has been set for his next appearance.
As Koffa stepped out of the police headquarters, his supporters erupted into fresh chants, their voices drowning out the afternoon’s tension. He raised a fist in the air before entering his vehicle, leaving behind a police force still grappling with unanswered questions—and an investigation that may yet have missing pieces.
