MONROVIA — Kickball will be introduced at the All African Games beginning this year, marking a major milestone for the women-dominated sport and positioning Liberia as a regional leader in its development.
The announcement was made Wednesday, Feb. 5, by Swahilu K. Jusu, president of the All African Games, during the inauguration of kickball activities in Sierra Leone.
Jusu, who also serves as permanent secretary at Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Sports, said the decision followed his assessment of the sport’s growing quality and social impact.
“As a result, kickball will be introduced at the All African level beginning this year,” he said.
Jusu called on the Liberia Kickball Federation to take a leading role in promoting and teaching the sport across the Mano River region and beyond.
With kickball’s formal introduction to the continental stage, he said Liberia and Sierra Leone are expected to serve as key drivers of the sport’s expansion in Africa.
Jusu noted that kickball has demonstrated strong potential to positively impact young women and girls through organized sports, teamwork and social cohesion.
Kickball, widely regarded as a traditional Liberian sport, has steadily grown over the years, providing opportunities for players to develop skills and compete locally and internationally.
Its inclusion in the All African Games represents the highest level of recognition the sport has received on the continent.
Liberia Kickball Federation President Emmanuel Suprise Whea is leading a delegation of about 60 players and officials currently in Sierra Leone on a four-day exhibition and instructional tour.
Whea said the visit is designed to give Liberian athletes regional exposure while strengthening cross-border cooperation in the sport’s development.
“This trip is an important step for our players and coaches,” Whea said. “We are confident in their preparation and proud to represent Liberia.”
The exhibition and teaching tournament has brought together several teams, creating a platform for competition and reinforcing regional sports unity.
The Sierra Leone visit marks the federation’s first international engagement under Whea’s leadership.
Sports stakeholders say the experience will help young Liberian athletes showcase their talent beyond national borders while laying the groundwork for kickball’s emergence as a recognized African women’s sport.
