MONROVIA — A senior opposition figure has accused the ruling Unity Party administration of promoting “extremism” and suppressing dissent, alleging that the government is targeting critics and weakening Liberia’s democratic space.
Moses Acarous Gray, a former lawmaker and senior member of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), made the claims during an appearance on OK FM, citing a series of recent political disputes he said reflect an effort to intimidate opposition voices.
“This regime got at now former House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, leading to his unconstitutional removal — a direct slap in the face of democracy and the Liberian people,” Gray said, referring to the removal of Koffa, who has been a vocal critic of the government.
Gray also pointed to Gbarpolu County Sen. Amara M. Konneh, saying the senator faced public attacks after raising concerns about alleged governance lapses and administrative wrongdoing.
He further alleged that the government has turned its attention to Bomi County Sen. Daniel Naatehn, describing him as one of several opposition lawmakers being portrayed as a threat to the administration’s agenda.
Gray claimed the administration accused Naatehn of praying for the government’s downfall and of exploiting public hardship to advance presidential ambitions.
“You were here when the government attacked and accused Snowe of wanting to overthrow the regime because he also spoke critically about the Boakai-Koung administration’s disregard for the rule of law, poor infrastructure, and failure to address basic issues,” Gray said, referencing Bomi County Sen. Edwin Snowe.
Gray described the administration as totalitarian, alleging it seeks to dominate public life, restrict freedom of speech and intimidate citizens.
“A totalitarian government will go into your life history and want to control everything within the country,” he said.
Despite what he called attempts to silence him, Gray vowed to continue speaking out against what he described as abuses of power. “I reaffirm my unwavering and unquenching thirst and bravery to democratically and constitutionally challenge the current regime,” Gray said, urging
